Surprising Realizations

When we arrived in Van Horn, TX last Sunday, it didn't look like much - a crusty old town with signs pointing to other destinations. For us, it was just a place to stop overnight after a long drive in between desirable dispersed camping.

But surprising realizations happen in unexpected places.
.
This seemingly bare bones, dusty RV park in the middle of nowhere had full hook-ups: not just water and shore power (that's electricity in RV-speak) but a personal sewer at each site. That meant luxuriously long hot showers with nary a worry about depleting our precious water supply nor having to visit a dump station to empty, well, you know. The park also had inexpensive washer/dryers right on-site and we were overdue for laundry day. Yet the piece de resistance for me was a teeny town library just a three minute drive away that had high speed internet so I could upload my class recordings in mere minutes, woohoo!
.
We might as well have been at the Four Seasons.
.
In my brick and mortar home, I never used to give a second thought about everyday needs; like water, electricity, and where my poop goes. Being on the road has taught me otherwise: these things have taken on a whole new meaning.
.
On our mats, our basic necessities are our breath, our senses, and our strength. We don't think too much about deeply inhaling, our steady gaze, or standing up until something goes awry. If you've ever abandoned your practice for one reason or another, you know what I mean - you realize how strong and flexible and peaceful you really were when you were regularly getting on your mat. Like traveling in an RV, yoga heightens my awareness about the seemingly simplest things and what I may be taking for granted. Friends, let's not wait until something is stripped away to recognize how blessed and abundant we really are. Let's deepen our gratitude for all that is precious: our relationships, our resources, our rights.
